FAQ

Common questions about keys, ranking, speed, storage, paywalls and updates.

Do I need API keys?

No. Every key is optional, and without one Scholar still searches Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, arXiv, Crossref, PubMed and the other open sources. Semantic Scholar and OpenAlex keys raise limits and widen coverage, a DashScope key enables the cloud ranking model, and Exa, Scopus and CORE join only when their keys are set. When fewer sources are available, Scholar asks the rest for more results so the pool stays wide. Once you have a key, scholar-mcp keys set NAME saves it for every client, see Configuration.

Which tools will my agent see?

The core profile has six tools, search_papers, paper_info, recommend_papers, search_authors, read_paper and download_paper. SCHOLAR_MCP_EXTENSIONS=research adds build_paper_graph and paper_library. The plugins and desktop bundles enable it by default, and scholar-mcp install --profile research writes it for you.

Does it run on Intel Macs and Windows on ARM?

Yes. The release index passed with --find-links has ready-made cryptography packages for those platforms, so no Rust or OpenSSL is needed. The desktop bundles support Apple silicon and Intel Macs and include their own Python. The launch scripts are tested on macOS, Linux and Windows, on x64 and ARM64.

How do I update?

Run scholar-mcp update, or scholar-mcp update --check to see whether a new version exists. It upgrades the way you installed. Because scholar-mcp install registers the installed command, every client uses the new version after a restart. Configurations that pin a version with uvx need the version in the command changed. For the Claude Desktop bundle, open the newer .mcpb from GitHub Releases. The changelog lists what changed.

Which ranking model is used?

DashScope qwen3-rerank when DASHSCOPE_API_KEY is set, or your own service when SCHOLAR_RERANK_URL is set. Without either, or when the remote call fails, the local FlashRank model from the rerank extra takes over, and the recommended uvx command, the container and the desktop bundles include it. scholar://status and debug=true show the service and model that actually ran, and the reason when the local model stepped in.

Why is a search slow?

A search asks a dozen or more sources at once, follows citations from the most relevant papers, then ranks every candidate again, which is much more than one API call. Scholar waits up to 30 seconds before choosing seed papers (SCHOLAR_SOURCE_BUDGET_S). Sources that miss it are not dropped, they join before the final ranking. Retrieval, expansion and metadata share a 40-second acquisition window; final ranking follows. The first use of the local ranking model also downloads it once. debug=true shows each source’s time and count, and Semantic Scholar or OpenAlex keys help when limits are the cause.

Can Scholar read paywalled papers?

Scholar looks for open copies first, in archives, open repositories, preprint servers and Unpaywall. For papers your university subscribes to, it can fetch through your library’s EZproxy with a session from your own sign-in, one requested paper at a time. Scholar never asks for or stores a password. See Institutional access.

Google Scholar asks for verification. What can I do?

Install the optional google extra, for example scholar-mcp[google,rerank] in your server command, with Chrome, Edge or Chromium and ffmpeg available. A separate worker reuses a private browser profile and reads verified pages directly, while HTTP keeps its own cookies. Set SCHOLAR_GOOGLE_RECOVERY=off to turn it off. Details are in Sources.

Where are papers and notes stored?

Under ~/.scholar-mcp by default, with PDFs in papers/, the SQLite library and JSONL snapshots in kb/, and Markdown exports in vault/. SCHOLAR_DATA_DIR, SCHOLAR_KB_DIR and SCHOLAR_DOWNLOAD_DIR change the locations. read_paper reuses a retained copy or removes its new temporary download after reading. download_paper keeps a PDF.

Can I run Scholar over HTTP?

Yes. Normally a client starts Scholar on your machine and talks to it through standard input and output (stdio). When a client cannot start a program, such as an agent in a web page or a server several people share, Scholar runs as a network service instead. Run scholar-mcp serve --http, or set SCHOLAR_MCP_TRANSPORT=http, to serve at http://127.0.0.1:8000/mcp. SCHOLAR_MCP_HOST, SCHOLAR_MCP_PORT and SCHOLAR_MCP_PATH change the address. A cloud agent cannot reach localhost on your computer, so remote clients need a reachable, protected deployment.
